I doubt anyone reads this, but if you do, check out my piece at nolafugees.com:
http://nolafugees.com/NF/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=170&Itemid=1

Also, does anyone know if I can get my friends page or a community page in an RSS feed?  I'd like to just add it to my Google Reader (RSS feeds, they're this new things I'm trying, about ten years late.  New Orleans: City of the Future!)

Anyway, if you're out there, cheerio!

Recommendation Apr. 9th, 2007 @ 10:44 pm
I can't begin to explain what it's like to live in New Orleans. It's a conversation that will require the twilight of early-morning hours, so many cigarettes as to make your throat rough, and a total overabundance of whiskey. Some may not want to know what it's like down here, I can try to respect that. For those who want to know, but don't know when they will find themselves with a partied-out New Orleanian with too much whiskey in the belly, I offer as a recommendation the works of a number of authors. Nolafugees.com is an internet magazine started in November 2005. Year Zero is a collection of their best articles in their first year of publication. The quality of writing is, in my opinion, unparalleled. It is also, in my opinion, the most honest and realistic portrayal of life in the Big Easy, although a fair amount of it is completely fabricated. The website is current, but to understand the perspective (and dare I say, mission statement) of these guys, and to see where the city is coming back from (NF covers the "post-apocalyptic beat"), Year Zero is where it's at. I could say more, but I'd only crib their words. Below is a review of the book (from the New Orleans Times-Picayune/NOLA.com), as well as the link of where to buy it online. If you want to figure out some sort of alternate arrangement, I'll even get the book signed for you. But look into it. It's worth your time.

MY FAVORITE TV CHARACTERS EVER Aug. 22nd, 2006 @ 10:18 pm
Ok so now I'm stealing memes from James Gunn ( http://jamesgunn.com/updates.html#8-15-06 )and Joss Whedon ( http://whedonesque.com/comments/11157#137875 ) Top 25 Characters of My Preference. Rules, According to Mr. Gunn:

The RULES

No puppets or cartoons, otherwise Kermit and Homer would definitely be on this list.
No mini-series, otherwise I'd definitely include Philip Marlow from THE SINGING DETECTIVE.
No reality show people, otherwise Matt Kennedy Gould from THE JOE SCHMO SHOW would be on here.
All characters must be regulars on the show. *CR NOTE: Otherwise it would be Amy Gardner on West Wing

1) Spike (James Marsters) / Buffy the Vampire Slayer / The absolute sexiest character ever. Ever.

2) Janitor (Neil Flynn) / Scrubs / He's a figment of JD's imagination, he's a failed actor, he's well hung.

3) Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) / The Office / Because he's the most believable ordinary/extraordinary man.

4) Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford) / The West Wing / He totaled a hybrid with a big dumb SUV, and I still love him. A little less, though.

5) Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) / Gilmore Girls / Because she's cooler than me

6) Angel (David Boreanaz) / Angel / Because he sucked on Buffy, but all of a sudden he's funny!

7) Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie) / The O.C. / Because he's still the kid from chino who burned down a house.

8) Larry David (Larry David) / Curb Your Enthusiasm) / Somebody get a sponge!

9) Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) / Saved By The Bell / Who didn't want Zack Morris?

10) Dana Whitaker (Felicity Huffman) / Sports Night / I'll answer this momentarily.

11) Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon) / Sex and the City / Because she calls Carrie on the bullshit bagels.

12) Zoe Washburne (Gina Torres / Firefly / See "War Stories"

13) Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) / Buffy the Vampire Slayer / She saved the world a lot.

Ok I can't come up with any more. Guess I need to watch more tv

let me just say Feb. 10th, 2006 @ 08:47 pm
i'm so excited to go see my girls next weekend. i can't remember the last time i was this excited, actually.

and the fact that a month after that, i get to see most of my favorite people in the world in one of my favorite places in the world, well that's just a peachy little treat.

Feb. 4th, 2006 @ 05:00 pm
last night i got unwittingly sucked into a bad situation wherein i was hanging out with a guy who a) does spells b) tells stories about getting "reamed" on an e-mail community c) is nicknamed "sparkle," and not in an ironic d. coulter kind of way.

i need to get out of this fucking city right now.

Jan. 9th, 2006 @ 05:18 pm
when i went back to ny before senior year (with ipod), i gave my sister all my cds. i had no need for them, so i just left them. they've been there ever since. i've been in kansas city since may, burning cds for my car when i feel like listening to them. finally, last week, i took the big silver book back. the cds that i listened to non-stop before i got my ipod: flaming lips, radiohead, pulp, mix cds, the shins, postal service -- everything before i went digital.

so anyway, i got it back. i was listening to the flaming lips in my car today. all of a sudden i really wanted to hear "do you realize?" so i opened my cd book and on the first page was the first mix cd doug made for me. obviously i hadn't listened to it in about a year. i was listening to it on the way to pick up lunch, and i was really enjoying it. it went to "y control" and i remembered sitting at the rubin front desk, listening to it for the first time, and how much i loved it. i remember listening to that cd on repeat on my discman the whole time i was working basically. it was good stuff.

and while ruminating, i started cracking up. i am not geographically in the best place right now, but i'm pretty happy with everything else going on. i am sad that i'm not in the same cities as my best friends, but i'm sort of okay with it. i'm getting along just fine in all areas but one (i need a nickname for him. perhaps something like captain no-brains.) anyway, capt. no-brains is a work in progress. but anyway, thats not the point.

anyway, so on to the laughter part. i was thinking about estrangement and douglas and etc. and i just started cracking up thinking OF COURSE when you start a friendship with one of the parties constantly crying, it's a bad sign. i mean let's be real. that should have been a real big warning sign. big red flashing lights that say "don't attach to me, don't be my best friend, don't get involved here." I practially had yellow caution tape around me.

anyway, it just made me laugh.

so christmas is in a week. holy fuck. i'm excited for people to come in town. but then they're all going to leave and that's not going to be good at all. i suppose i'm going to start reading more. i suppose i'll library it, because i'm going to have to go into money-saving mode.

i finished all my christmas shopping. this year, for christmas, i am asking for three things: the buffy series, a digital camera, and the dlo transpod for my car. if i get two out of three i'll be happy. as long as one of them is buffy.

anyway, i don't really have anything else to say.

1) nick - AMAZING. he designed the dress i had in my head the second they announced the challenge. reminded me of the dress on my barbie that had hair to her knees or something.

2) andrae - crybaby, your outfit is ugly.

3) daniel franco - yes you are like a wee puppy and i don't want you to cry but your style bores me.

4) daniel vosovic - ooh asymmetry, but not with such wendy pepper crap. also, i love you.

5) diana - you are so bizarre. i love you and your crazy red holey top (but not really the skirt)

6) emmett - YOUR CLOTHES ARE HIDEOUS! YOUR TIME IS COMING. YOU WILL BE OUT! AUF WIEDERSEHEN. go back to designing stupid men's abercrombie shit.

7) guadalupe - i like you. and your clothes. you're in.

8) kara - you're crazy, but boring.

9) marla - what were you thinking?

10) raymundo - i liked your first outfit, and your hair.

11) santino - most people hate you. i just laugh. oh, and your clothes are hot.

12) zulema - why are you even on this? your girl looked like she had an ass on her thighs. and last week her ass was hanging out. why are you here?

13) chloe - cute enough. you're a little too kara saun i.e. good but boring for my tastes.

i'm never gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow Dec. 12th, 2005 @ 11:16 am
so i've been listening to radiohead and elliott smith and a bunch of music i haven't listened to in like a year. except i'm not depressed, it just is good.

the other night as i was driving to coach's, i was listening to an old cd i had made and it reminded me of d. coulter. i've hit that mark where i don't really care about all the stuff that happened. i mean, it happened and had consequences blah blah blah, but there really isn't any emotional resonance there. i don't have emotional resonance with the events or with the person i knew. i mean after a while a person is divorced from his actions and the feelings associated, and he is just his own character, with all the attributes that made you enjoy the person in the first place. sometimes you realize that the attributes itself aren't enough, which is how i felt about michael. when i stripped away what it was that he meant to me, i realized that there wasn't anything left that would make me try to be his friend again. i just didn't have the interest. and obviously i've had the opposite reaction with people from high school. i don't care what happened, i still like them as people and i'm not going to ignore that for some misguided and pointless grudge. and i guess i feel that way towards d. coulter. i'm not saying we'd be bff, and that's not really the point. but in all actuality, i guess there isn't a point. because in order for that to come to fruition, there needs to be something to make it happen. things don't just happen, and we aren't going to be friends who just start talking online for no reason. and i'm not really going to just randomly contact him. maybe i could, but it's not going to happen. for years, i was sure that natalie and i were supposed to be friends. but i wasn't just going to call her.

anyway, it's all just a big wave of speculation and talking. i'm home sick from work, so hello livejournal. see you again in a few weeks/months. or possibly days in case there's a meme attack.

1) the office last night was 22 minutes of pure bliss. i lost it about the time that angela did. goodness.

2) seriously, antm, you pretty much suck. i watch you, and think you're okay, and then i am reintroduced to the show i always liked better anyway, PROJECT RUNWAY. oh, p. runway, you complete me.

3) the o.c. is like a blanket.

4) that's about it as far as regular tv shows. old buffy = amazing. even terrible buffy is better than most crap on tv.

ay ay ay it's been a long day, or week, or month, or whatever. i was sure i was moving back to ny soon, but now it looks like that might be pushed back a couple of months. spring/summer is probably the best time to move anyway. so who knows, my life plan changes about every three days.

christmas is coming. i'm not so into it. i'm also not into my job, people leaving, and blizzards. oh, and i'm having big alienation from a friend. it's been about six weeks, and i just realized that as i started to type it. i know there are things i could do but to be honest i'm not quite sure i'm into doing them.

i've spent a good amount of time the past two days organizing paperwork and bills, working on my resume, etc. time to try that grown-up thing, at least while i'm stuck inside due to snow.

johnny cash and buffy the vampire slayer Nov. 19th, 2005 @ 01:25 pm
i saw walk the line last night. i've been looking forward to it for months. i loved it. joaquin phoenix was incredible. i mean, the movie is what it is -- it's conventional; the script isn't really amazing; even at 2.5 hours its not still not enough for johnny cash. but the performances - the performances - they are *kiss in the air* bellisimo! incredible. joaquin gives us an amazing idea of johnny cash, and reese witherspoon is perfect as june carter. i think they're going to get the nods, especially thinking of how few movies i actually have thought were good this year.

also, i am watching buffy. they show it at 6am every weekday, and i tivo it (duh i'm not up at 6am). its funny - i haven't watched it in a really long time. i think the last time i saw an episode was junior year. and my life certainly was different then. i had three other friends who liked it, who i'm not really friends with anymore. and one who i wasn't friends with but am now.

anyway, there's lots else, i guess. most of the things i think i don't really want to write down. i'm glad natalie is here. its great to have someone around that you can talk to about stuff. really, seeing movies or watching tv really isn't as good without her. it's just great to talk to someone about things who agrees with you :)

this probably sounds dumb and is one big run-on sentence. by the way, i'm a little high.

i don't think i want to move back to new york.

i just got a text message and my phone is downstairs. i didn't have anything else to say anyway.
